Barnwell después de Lillo (1731-1798). Manifestaciones del genio desperdiciado en la adaptación novelística de The London Merchant por Thomas Skinner Surr

Resumen


Cierta tradición crítica ha consagrado a The London Merchant (1731), de George Lillo, como obra inaugural de la “tragedia doméstica” o “drama burgués”. Pese a los altibajos que sufrió la popularidad de la pieza, ésta fue objeto de un importante revival en 1796. Al calor de éste se publicó George Barnwell. A Novel (1798), de Thomas Skinner Surr. El autor complicó notablemente el argumento y el sistema de personajes del drama para componer un relato pleno de inquietudes características de su propio tiempo: la emergencia de la novela gótica, la paranoia contrarrevolucionaria y, quizás sobre todo, la polémica sobre el genio que atravesó la segunda mitad del siglo. Este trabajo expone cómo los personajes de Barnwell (quien adquiere ahora cualidades chattertonianas) y Mr Mental (cuya figura es el más relevante aporte de Surr) son caracterizados en la novela a partir de la figura del genio desperdiciado. Abordaremos esta problemática a la luz del debate dieciochesco sobre el genio así como de las circunstancias ficcionales que afrontan los personajes, de cuya caracterización se desprende una reflexión sobre el potencial humano, sobre la naturaleza del genio y sobre las condiciones que propician, obturan o pervierten su florecimiento en el seno de la modernidad burguesa.
